Casa EBM is a restyling project of a single-level apartment located in a social housing in Marina di Ragusa.
The apartment features a long, narrow footprint (5.60 m x 26.00 m) and a dual garden that seems to cross the home transversely, thanks to two large opposing openings situated by the living area.
Except for the kitchen, the entire home is designed as a continuous open space, punctuated by two colored volumes that house the main utilities and act as a filter between the living and sleeping areas.
To adapt to the changing needs of the owners, sliding panels can be extended from these volumes to reconfigure the space and its functions: the master bedroom, walk-in closet, and ensuite bathroom can be isolated from the rest of the house, while the study can be transformed into a guest bedroom with its own small bathroom.
The entire interior floor is coated in white polyurethane resin, while the technical volumes are crafted from wood and masonry, finished in the same matching RAL tone. Externally, the distribution pathways and terraces are made of smoothed concrete framed by local stone.
Conceived around the idea of living the house as a single, fluid space, the project ensures a high degree of flexibility and allows the rooms to adapt to various scenarios. In doing so, it prompts a reflection: by altering the housing standards upon which today’s urban parameters are set, the conventional idea of the home is challenged.
